Edet was sent home from school. His father was unable to pay his tuition. This made edet sad because all of this friend would be writing the exam besides him. What am I gonna do? He said to himself. After so much contemplation, he went into his room, changed into his regular clothes and strode down the street.
There was a mechanic shop seven blocks away from his house. Edet decided to ask the manager if there was anything he could do to help for income. Unfortunately he was yelled at; you should be either 14 or 15 years of age and you should be in school. Why are you looking for work at this age? Please don’t be offended. He said, there is a reason behind this. Whatever the reason is, I don’t want to hear it. Now leave my shop, the manager requested.
Edet was broken-hearted, if he could just give me 2 mins of his time. Not giving up he walked another mile to another shop. This time it was a lady, she sells oranges and bread and other provisions in her shop. Hello madam, my name is Edet, I can sell a basket of your oranges if you will pay me. Oh dear, you are so smart, she said. I will give you the profit, please sell the oranges for me, one orange is 4 bucks but you can sell it for 5 and keep the profit. It’s been here over a week now, and will soon rotten. Please do sell them.
Edet was glad at last he had finally gotten himself a job. He took the oranges to sell. Buy my sweet, sweet orange here. Buy my sweet sweet, orange here was his slogan. An elderly man driving by saw him and stopped his car to buy Edet orange. How much is your orange? 5 bucks each he replied. You are little and smart, I have a riddle for you. If you answer this riddle correctly I will buy all of your 50 oranges and pay you double. that would be 750 bucks he asked. Yes. I’m not good at answering riddles but I’ll try because I need the money. What if I answer wrong? No problem then I’ll just buy 1 for 5 bucks. Okay, bring it on. Said Edet.
“There is something in this world that usually makes one cry without sadness or pain or beating. It does not bother anyone. But if you bother it, peel or cut it, you will begin to cry” what is it?
After a long thought, Edet smiled “it’s an onion’’ yes! You are correct. Now I will have to buy all of this, the man said. Oh yes, please do. Edet was very excited.
It was dawn. With the money in his hand, Edet saw a group of young boys gambling, he thought what if i play this game, i might have more than what the elderly man gave me and even more than what the lady who has the orange would give me. I am smart, I can save for my school.
He went and gambled the money and loss. Edet was sad again. Thank goodness i was able to save 250 bucks out of it, and that is the lady’s money. I gambled all of the riddle money away. He went back to the shop and gave the lady her money, she then in return thanked him and gave him 50 bucks out of it. Edet went home feeling sad and angry.
